FAQ

Do you need any formal qualification to work at Belaire Ferries?

This depends on the position that you apply for.

Deckhand – No, we can train you on what you need to know. Ultimately to be successful in this role you will need to have great customer service and a positive attitude.

Skipper – Yes, you will need to have a current commercially recognised maritime qualification relevant to the size and power of the vessel(s) that we are recruiting for.

Do I need a CV and cover letter to apply?

A CV is a great tool to showcase what skills and experiences you have. We don’t require a cover letter as part of the application process but would ask that you complete the brief video introduction link that forms part of the application process and allows us to learn more about you.

Do I need to declare my Covid vaccination status?

No, Belaire Ferries doesn’t require this. As a public transport provider Belaire Ferries would be required to follow any law changes mandated by the government.

Do you require a pre-employment drug & alcohol test as part of your recruitment process?

Yes, any offer of employment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a pre-employment drug & alcohol test through our preferred supplier. It is a legal requirement that maritime operators in New Zealand have a Drug and Alcohol policy in place.

How long does it take to become a qualified Skipper?

This ultimately will depend a lot on you and how motivated you are. For someone with no previous experience this would take on average 3 – 5 years. The first progression would be to gain the Qualified Deck Crew (QDC) qualification before moving on to the Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL).

Do you accept Australian maritime qualifications?

To be successfully offered a role as a vessel skipper, you would need to have a Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) recognised qualification. Australian qualifications can be transferred onto the SeaCert framework.

We are happy to look at these on a case-by-case basis and work with you on how to have them recognised.

Can you take applications from overseas candidates?

No, we are not currently able to accept applications from those who are not legally entitled to work in New Zealand or offer sponsorship.

What type of employment do you offer?

We are a service delivery focused business that works across a large part of the day. Within the team we can offer full-time, part-time and casual commitments depending on the role we are recruiting for.
